WORLD IN BRIEF : RWANDA : Missionary, Orphans Safely Evacuated

Amelia Barbieri, the 76-year-old lay missionary who refused to abandon children trapped with her at an orphanage in violence-torn Rwanda, is home safely with 44 of her orphans, according to church officials in Rome. Barbieri and the children were evacuated by Italian relief organizations and sent to Bergamo in northern Italy. The children have been placed in a rehabilitation center in Verona. Meanwhile, in Washington, State Department deputy spokeswoman Christine Shelly urged government and military leaders in Rwanda to do “everything in their power” to end the violence that has claimed more than 100,000 lives over the last three weeks.
