The arrival of “Maverick,” with its big $17.2-million gross, eclipsed the performance of most everything else and accounted for 40% of all tickets sold.
Continuing attractions, as a result, didn’t fare well. Despite adding 548 screens, “The Crow” had a 33% drop in business from the previous weekend; “When a Man Loves a Woman” was down 31%, despite the addition of 188 screens. “Crooklyn,” from director Spike Lee, did not add screens in its second weekend, and took a 42% tumble from its gross a weekend earlier.
“Even Cowgirls Get the Blues” from Fine Line Pictures was in the doldrums in its debut. The film was playing on 533 screens and took in a meager $672,577.
