Avalon: Public Hearing Will Focus on Proposal for $100-Million Resort

A $100-million resort has been proposed for Santa Catalina Island.
Catalina G.B.C. Ltd. Partnership, a development partnership formed by The Pointe Group in Arizona, has leased several acres of land from the Santa Catalina Island Co. to build a 300-suite hotel, City Manager Robert F. Clark said.
If it gets City Council approval, the hotel will be erected on Descanso Beach, between the Casino building and Hamilton Cove, Clark said.
The development would contribute hotel and property taxes to the island community.
“That will allow the city to provide more services to the community. We’re talking millions of dollars a year,” Clark said.
It is hoped the hotel will attract visitors in the off-tourist season, especially people who can use the casino building for conventions.
Clark said the developer also plans to lease the Catalina Island Golf Club and expand it to 18 holes.
The council will hold a public meeting on the development plan Tuesday in Avalon’s Los Angeles County Courthouse at 7 p.m.
