Discovery of Explosives Forces Major Evacuation in Monterey

MONTEREY, Calif. — Hundreds of homes were evacuated for more than seven hours Thursday after several cases of old explosives were found in a vacant house, authorities said.
There were no reported injuries, said city spokesman Fred Cohn.
Authorities removed more than 300 pounds of the explosive, believed to be dynamite, from the home. The explosives were detonated at a city beach about 8 p.m.
The north Monterey home where the explosives were found had been vacant for some time and was recently sold, Cohn said.
The explosives were found about 10 a.m. by house cleaners, he said.
Authorities evacuated several hundred nearby houses and apartments.
California 1 was closed until about 7 p.m.
