AMSTERDAM MEMORIES

A Nov. 27 letter from Dick Sheppard concerning the New Amsterdam Theater on New York’s 42nd Street reminded me of that great theater.
My father, Eddie Cantor, not only appeared in the midnight shows on the Amsterdam Roof Theater but also had a great success in a musical show called “Whoopee,” produced some years later, 1928, to be exact, by Florenz Ziegfeld in the New Amsterdam. My older sister and I, still schoolkids, were allowed to go to the theater on weekends. Our choice was always “Whoopee . “ The most fun was hearing Daddy ad - lib or make changes, always working to improve his scenes.
It would be wonderful if the New Amsterdam Theater were rebuilt and could be enjoyed by a new generation.
