Plan ahead! Foreign correspondents’ nightmares are filled with overbooked hotels, delayed flights, unobtainable visas and maddening bureaucracies. Scheduling three or four months in advance helps overcome some hurdles.
At other times, reporters keep an ear to the radio, an eye on the news wires, a hand on the laptop and stand ready to bolt out the door patting their pockets and repeating the correspondents’ mantra: “Ait tickets, money, notebooks, passport.”
