Steve Medrano of Bishop Amat and Justin Lehr of West Covina are listed among the top 100 high school baseball prospects by Baseball America magazine.

Medrano, a 6-foot, 160-pound shortstop, is rated 56th. Lehr, a 6-foot, 180-pound pitcher and catcher, is rated 68th.

COMMUNITY COLLEGES

Citrus pitcher Kevin Tolan has been selected as a preseason All-American by the California Community College Baseball Coaches Assn.

Citrus is ranked 18th in the state by the association.

Pasadena first baseman Robert O’Brien and outfielder Ajani Carter are listed among players to watch at their positions by Collegiate Baseball magazine.

* The Citrus College men’s basketball team entered Foothill Conference play with a 13-8 record, but the Owls have lost their first two conference games.

On Saturday, Antelope Valley defeated Citrus, 90-75.

Former Monrovia High standout Jarod Mix continues to be an offensive force for Citrus. He scored 21 points against Antelope Valley.

COLLEGES

Three players with ties to the San Gabriel Valley have been selected to the Mizuno preseason All-American baseball team.

USC shortstop Gabe Alvarez, Cal State Long Beach pitcher Scott Rivette and Santa Clara catcher Karl Thompson were selected to the 15-member team.

Alvarez, a junior who graduated from Bishop Amat, batted .326 with seven home runs and 51 runs batted in.

Rivette, a junior right-hander who transferred last season from Citrus College, was 14-1 with a 2.50 earned-run average. He had 116 strikeouts in 111 2/3 innings.

Thompson, a former standout at Diamond Bar High, batted .338 with nine home runs and 64 runs batted in last season for Santa Clara, which won the West Coast Conference and advanced to the NCAA playoffs.

* The Cal Poly Pomona men’s basketball team, riding a five-game winning streak, opens play in the California Collegiate Athletic Assn. tonight at Cal State San Bernardino.

Pomona, 12-2 and ranked 17th in NCAA Division II, is coming off an 83-65 victory over Redlands. Tyrone Merriweather scored 17 points and Barnabas James had 15 for the Broncos. Matt Jones, a 7-foot-1 transfer from Fullerton College, made his first appearance for Pomona and had three rebounds.

Merriweather is averaging 16 points and seven rebounds. Mike Reynolds is averaging 11 points and James 10 for Pomona, which plays host to UC Riverside on Saturday. Bryan Wilcox is averaging a conference-high 4.7 assists for the Broncos.

* The Cal Poly Pomona women’s team, which has won or shared 13 consecutive CCAA titles, opens defense of its championship on Saturday in Phoenix against first-year conference affiliate Grand Canyon.

Pomona enters the game 7-8 after a victory over Alaska-Fairbanks and a loss to Loyola Marymount last week.

Freshman Jessica Eggleston is averaging 15 points and seven rebounds for the Broncos.

* The Azusa Pacific men’s basketball team plays at Point Loma on Saturday in a Golden State Athletic Conference game.

Azusa entered the week 11-6 after winning two of three games last week. The Cougars defeated Dominion, 108-62, lost to The Master’s, 90-86, and defeated Christian Heritage, 97-69.

Azusa Pacific sophomore Raymond Tutt leads the GSAC in scoring, averaging 27 points a game. Deric Daniels is averaging 16 points, Eric Wattree 12 and Tim Sebek 11 for the Cougars.

* Christy Brock of Azusa Pacific, a freshman from Eugene, Ore., is the top scorer among GSAC players, averaging 18 points a game.

Azusa Pacific, which entered the week 3-10, plays at Point Loma Saturday.

* A 2-K and 5-K run and a 5-K walk that will benefit the Azusa Pacific track program and the Azusa Unified School District’s physical education/athletic program will be staged Feb. 4.

Derek Hodges, Pasadena--Hodges scored 23 points for the Bulldogs in their 76-74 Pacific League victory over previously unbeaten Crescenta Valley, which was ranked No. 3 in the state at the time.

COLLEGE ATHLETE OF THE WEEK

Tyrone Merriweather, Cal Poly Pomona--Merriweather, a junior forward, scored 17 points as the Broncos defeated Redlands, 83-65, to improve to 12-2.

Merriweather ranks second in the California Collegiate Athletic Assn., averaging 16 points a game. He is fifth in rebounding.

CALENDAR

Pomona Raceway will be the site of 10 Junior Drag Racing League events. The program, which began two years ago, features mini-sized dragsters powered by five-horsepower engines. Drivers are 8 to 17 years old. Information: (818) 914-4761.

* The Foothill-Citrus Baseball Umpires Assn. will have its first meeting Jan. 22 at Walnut High. Umpires can earn $46 for working one-man, non-varsity games. The association will provide training in rules and mechanics. Information: (818) 964-9445.

* A baseball skills camp focusing on pitching and hitting will be staged Jan. 21-22 at Temple City High.

* The Arcadia Recreation Department is accepting registration for its 1995 adult basketball league, which begins play Jan. 25 and runs through March 29.
