School District Gets Grant for Calculators

SANTA ANA — The Santa Ana Unified School District has received a $10,000 grant to purchase graphing calculators for students in calculus classes, a spokeswoman said.
Irvine-based Allergan Inc. made the donation to aid college-bound students in their science and math studies, said Carolyn Pegg, the district’s grants and special projects coordinator.
The donation “is a big deal in that the obstacle in getting into college is often math and science courses, not language. In order to do well in those courses, (students) need graphing calculators,” she said.
The calculators, which cost $60 to $150, are designed to display complex mathematical equations in graphic form. District funds for the calculators were eliminated during budget cuts last year, Pegg said.
