A single man who paid a surrogate mother to bear his child was arrested in Philadelphia after admitting he beat and critically injured the 1-month-old boy, police said. James Alan Austin, 26, was charged with aggravated assault, endangering the welfare of a child and reckless endangerment, authorities said. Police said Austin, a bank financial analyst, admitted he beat and shook the boy several times. Austin paid a woman to bear his child, and she was artificially inseminated at an Indianapolis clinic. Clinic lawyers are seeking to freeze Austin’s custody rights.
