BEVERLY HILLS : Sentencing for Doctor, Wife in Insurance Scam Delayed

Sentencing for a Beverly Hills doctor and his ex-wife, who were involved in a $30-million insurance scam, was delayed Tuesday after he complained of chest pains and asked for medical treatment.
Los Angeles Superior Court Judge Nancy Brown grudgingly reset the hearing for Feb. 14, after commenting that she thought Dr. Mark Kaplan, 55, was playing sick.
Kaplan and Polina Ioffe, 50, were charged in July, 1993, with luring non-English-speaking, laid-off workers into filing phony workers’ compensation claims. Kaplan pleaded no contest to one count of conspiracy and three counts of insurance fraud. Ioffe pleaded no contest to one count of conspiracy.
Kaplan, in custody at the Men’s Central Jail in lieu of $5-million bail, is expected to receive eight years in prison and Ioffe could receive up to two years.
