For Buena High basketball Coach Glen Hannah, the videotape of the Bulldogs’ Channel League game at Dos Pueblos on Friday night won’t be as hard to watch as the one from the teams’ first meeting.
Until the end.
The Bulldogs lost, 68-64, in overtime and watched Dos Pueblos celebrate clinching at least a share of its first Channel League title.
A loss, yes, but not as bad as the 76-59 pounding Buena suffered against Dos Pueblos last month at Buena.
Buena (14-8, 8-4 in league play) held the ball for the final shot with the score 58-58 at the end of regulation. But with about nine seconds left, Trevor Jackson’s shot was blocked by Dos Pueblos center Matt Williams.
Dos Pueblos (20-2, 11-1) led throughout overtime and clinched the victory by making five of six free throws in the final minute.
The reason the Bulldogs had a chance to win was three-point shooting. The Bulldogs missed every three-point shot they took in the last Dos Pueblos game, but made 10 in this one, including six by Ryan Howery.
Howery finished with a team-leading 18 points. Center Ceneka Shaw scored 17 points.
Dos Pueblos point guard Khary Hicks scored 21.
Dos Pueblos chipped away at the lead in the fourth quarter and took a 58-54 lead with about four minutes to play. After Buena tied the score, 58-58, with 1:59 to play, the teams traded turnovers until Buena’s final shot was blocked by Williams.
