The Los Angeles City Council on Tuesday decided to chip in $100,000 toward regional lobbying efforts to keep the federal government from closing the Long Beach Naval Shipyard and the Los Angeles Air Force Base in El Segundo.
The 12-0 vote sent $50,000 each to the Southern California Committee to Save Our Shipyard and the South Bay Assn. of Chambers of Commerce, which are trying to get the facilities removed from the Department of Defense’s list of potential base closures this year.
According to Councilman Rudy Svorinich, who proposed the contributions, the effort to keep the shipyard has financial support from several agencies and local government entities.
The shipyard employs 3,100 technical workers. Its closure would cost the region about 10,000 jobs and cost the area’s economy an estimated $757 million, Svorinich said.
