Pollock’s Luck responded to a challenge in the stretch and went on to win Friday’s $65,500 Rising Market Stakes by three-quarters of a length over Wharf at Santa Anita.
Pollock’s Luck, ridden by Eddie Delahoussaye and carrying 118 pounds, covered one mile in 1:35 2/5. The 4-year-old Kentucky-bred paid $7.20, $3.80 and $2.40 as the second betting choice in the field of five.
Wharf, an 8-1 shot, rallied on the inside to take a short lead entering the stretch, but Pollock’s Luck had plenty left, despite setting the pace to that point.
Wharf returned $6.40 and $2.60, and Royal Chariot was another 12 lengths behind in third and paid $2.40 to show.
Lottery Winner and Off The Record, the 6-5 favorite who had won all of his seven previous starts in Argentina, completed the order of finish.
The victory, worth $36,250, increased Pollock’s Luck’s earnings to $266,408, with five victories in 14 starts.
