A 17-year-old boy was shot and killed by a Los Angeles County sheriff’s deputy in Lakewood early Monday morning after he jumped into a stolen car and tried to run over the officer, a sheriff’s spokesman said.
Responding to a call in the 4700 block of Deboyar Avenue in Lakewood about 12:30 a.m., Deputy Miguel Castillo, 42, saw two young men inside a late-model Oldsmobile, said Deputy Mark Bailey. Castillo also saw a sawed-off shotgun inside the car, which had a broken window on the driver’s side, Bailey said.
Castillo ordered the driver and his passenger to get out of the car, Bailey said, but the teen-age driver then put the car in drive and tried to run over the officer, pinning him to his squad car. The officer shot the suspect once in the chest, Bailey said.
The car then crashed into a parked car across the street. The victim, whose name was withheld pending notification of family members, died at the scene. His passenger, Anthony Reyes, 19, of Long Beach was arrested, but no charges were immediately filed against him.
Bailey said the Sheriff’s Department has launched an internal investigation of the incident, which is standard policy in all officer-involved shootings.
