Cruelty to Hens

The article “Grimes Canyon Residents Cling to Lush Land, Quiet Life,” Feb. 5, presents a rosy verbal picture of the egg industries in Grimes Canyon. The photo depicting a hoard of chickens crammed into wire cages, however, expresses a more vivid and complete story. Yet, this photo only begins to describe the cruelty and suffering endured by hens in the modern egg-producing industry.
I feel strongly that if Americans were aware of the poor treatment of these animals that they would demand a change. We all love our pets so much and treat them with such love. Why treat the animals we consume with such disdain? Eggs from free-running natural chickens can be purchased in Ventura County. Isn’t it worth the few extra cents?
