COLLEGE BASKETBALL ROUNDUP : Iowa’s Woolridge Makes Shot in the Nick of Time for Upset

Iowa gave Michigan State Coach Jud Heathcote a retirement clock Wednesday at Iowa City, and then the Hawkeyes had just enough time to beat him.

Andre Woolridge made a 15-foot jump shot with 2.3 seconds to play to give Iowa, 19-10 overall and 9-8 in the Big Ten, a 79-78 victory over the ninth-ranked Spartans (21-5, 13-4) that might have put the Hawkeyes into the NCAA tournament.

Iowa finishes the regular season Sunday at Indiana.

“We’re more confident with nine (league) wins, but we’re not totally confident,” Iowa Coach Tom Davis said. “I wish I could celebrate, but there are just too many variables. . . . It’s probably going to come down to Sunday.”

Malik Rose had 21 points and 13 rebounds at Philadelphia to lead Drexel (22-7) to a 72-52 victory over Northeastern (18-11) for the North Atlantic Conference championship, giving the Dragons a berth in the NCAA tournament. . . . Brian Evans scored 23 points as Indiana (18-11, 10-7) beat Wisconsin (13-13, 7-10) for the 29th consecutive time in the Big Ten, 72-70, at Madison, Wis. . . . Eighteen second-half points by forward Shawn Trice led Pennsylvania (22-5, 14-0) to a 69-57 Ivy League victory at Princeton (16-10, 10-4). . . . Leon Carter scored 13 of his 17 points in the second half to lead San Diego State (11-16) to a 71-57 victory over Fresno State (13-15) in the first round of the Western Athletic Conference tournament at Albuquerque. The Aztecs advance to a game against No. 22 Utah. In the other first-round game, David Evans scored 21 points to lead Colorado State (16-13) to an 84-75 victory over Air Force (8-20) and a second-round game against Brigham Young.
