Envisioning a 21st-Century Irvine, Councilman Greg Smith asked city officials to find out what it would take to ensure that future residential developments here are pre-wired for connection to the information superhighway.
Community Development Director Robert Johnson reported that new homes in Irvine are built with two to four telephone jacks and one coaxial cable for television.
To take full advantage of the information revolution, Johnson said new homes should be built with both a telephone line and coaxial cable input in every room, which would add about $900 to the construction cost of an average three-bedroom home.
