Applied Materials Inc. to Hire 2,900 in 1995: The world’s largest maker of equipment for semiconductor manufacturers plans to hire 2,900 workers this year, expanding its staff by 50%. Company spokesman Joe Pon said half the new hires will be employed at its headquarters in Santa Clara, Calif., which it is expanding, and the rest will work at Applied Materials factories overseas. The company is building plants in South Korea and Taiwan and is expanding its plant in Austin, Tex.
