Nation IN BRIEF : WASHINGTON, D.C. : Museum Recovers Last Stolen Artifact

The National Geographic Society recovered the last of three pre-Columbian gold artifacts stolen from its museum after a man turned in the item--a miniature frog clutching a snake in its mouth--to police. The police, who were still looking into Guy Phelps’ tale of how he came to have the frog, had not decided whether to charge him with receiving stolen property. Phelps said a homeless man charged with trying to pawn the other two artifacts had approached his wife and offered her a pawn ticket and the frog for $20, which she accepted. Phelps said he did not know of the piece’s value until he saw a story on the news.
