From Times Staff and Wire Reports

Sen. Howell Heflin announced his retirement, adding to the difficulty Democrats will face in trying to recapture the Senate next year. He is the fourth Democrat to bow out so far. Heflin is completing his third six-year term. Heflin, 73, has suffered from a series of medical problems in the past two years, but he insisted his health was good. Heflin, who served for six years as Alabama’s chief justice before coming to the Senate in 1979, said he wants to return home and spend more time with his family.
