PREP ROUNDUP : Irvine Beats Woodbridge in Swimming

With strong swims from Steve Ronson and some key second and third place finishes, Irvine held off Woodbridge, 92-78, in a Sea View League boys’ swimming meet Wednesday at Heritage Park.
Ronson easily won the 200-yard individual medley in 1 minute 52.53 seconds but had to work to beat Woodbridge’s Jason Pace in the 100 backstroke. It was close until the final 25 yards when Ronson pulled away to win in 52.53. Pace finished in 54.36.
Jeff Pack won the 100 breaststroke (1:04.09) and Irvine’s 200 freestyle relay team of Eric Chen, Bryce Turi, Doug Tabbert and Ray Wong won in 1:33.61.
It was the first time in three years Irvine (4-0, 2-0), ranked fourth in the county, has beaten Woodbridge.
Sean Moore and Dawson Hughes were double winners for No. 6 Woodbridge (3-1, 1-1).
In other Sea View League boys’ swimming:
Newport Harbor 93, Corona del Mar 77--The Sailors beat Corona del Mar (4-1, 1-1) for the first time in seven years. The Sea Kings are ranked fifth in the county.
Rudolpho Tinajero and Rob Williams each won two events for Newport Harbor (4-1, 1-1) and swam on the winning 200 medley relay (1:44.3) and the 400 freestyle relay (1:07.5) teams. Tinajero won the 100 butterfly (55.7) and the 200 individual medley (2:06.4). Williams won the 500 freestyle (5:07) and the 100 breaststroke (1:05.9).
Century League boys’ swimming:
Villa Park 125, Orange 44--Griffin Mays won two races for ninth-ranked Villa Park (7-0, 2-0). Mays won the 200 individual medley in 2:18.8 and the 100 butterfly in 1:02.7. He also swam the anchor leg on the winning 200 medley relay (1:51.8) and the third-leg of the winning 200 freestyle relay (1:36.1).
Century League girls’ swimming:
Villa Park 96, Orange 74--Jenny Michel won the 200 individual medley (2:20.9) and finished second in the 100 backstroke (1:01.7) for Villa Park (5-2, 2-0). Shannon Strini and Alyson Edoff each won two events for Orange (3-2, 0-2). Strini won the 50 freestyle (25.4) and the 100 freestyle (55.7). Edoff took first in the 200 (1:58.3) and 500 freestyle (5:23.2).
In South Coast League golf:
Capistrano Valley 205, Trabuco Hills 210--Scott Rynders shot three-over 39 for Capistrano Valley (7-1, 1-1) at Marbella. Nick Petralia shot 38 for Trabuco Hills.
Mater Dei 226, Dana Hills 231--Noel Tamparong shot six-over 42 for Mater Dei (6-4, 1-1) at El Niguel.
In nonleague golf:
El Modena 195, Chino Hills Ayala 238--Senior Sean Brocklebank shot five-under par 31, on the Orange course at Green River for El Modena (5-4). Brocklebank has been the medalist for El Modena in every match this season. Wednesday, he had five birdies and four pars, narrowly missing a 12-foot putt on the last hole.
