Police found an inoperable bomb in a car that was parked illegally Monday and arrested the car’s owner.
The explosive device, which contained electrical wires and black powder, was found after police were called about 6 a.m. by a Viceroy street resident complaining that a Volkswagen was blocking a driveway.
Police peering inside the car found the bomb, handgun ammunition and nunchakus, or fighting batons, Police Sgt. Jim Broomfield said.
The Orange County hazardous devices squad and sheriff’s deputies inspected the bomb and determined it was inoperable.
The car’s owner, Daniel A. Frenkel, 22, of Los Alamitos emerged from a nearby residence where he had been visiting and was questioned by police.
The car was impounded and Frenkel was arrested on suspicion of possessing an explosive device and was being held at Orange County Jail. Bail was set at $10,000.
