COMPTON : Declining Enrollment to Close Three Schools

School district officials plan to close three schools and convert another to a learning center because of declining enrollment.
Wilson Riles Elementary School, Mark Twain Elementary School and Cesar Chavez Alternative School are scheduled to be closed. Officials plan to convert Vanguard Middle School into a district learning center.
McKinley Elementary, which enrolls students from kindergarten through fifth grade, would become a school for kindergarten through third grade.
Officials have scheduled five public hearings at 7 p.m. next week to discuss the proposed changes.
The hearings, which will be conducted in English and Spanish, will be:
* Tuesday. Vanguard School, 13305 S. San Pedro St., Los Angeles;
* Wednesday. McKinley School, 14431 Stanford Ave., Compton; Riles School, 12501 S. Wilmington Ave., Compton, and Twain Elementary, 13024 N. Salinas Ave., Los Angeles.
* Thursday. Cesar Chavez Alternative School, 1623 118th St., Los Angeles.
