NEWPORT BEACH : Study to Explore Joint-Service Options
- Share via
The City Council has scheduled a special study session for Monday to map out strategies for economic development and rethink the way the city provides services.
Among the items on the agenda is a plan to join with Costa Mesa to offer some services, thus saving money for both cities. Joint-service possibilities include:
* Cooperation between or a merger of the fire departments.
* A reciprocal agreement to house female prisoners from Costa Mesa in the Newport Beach Jail and send Newport Beach’s overflow from seasonal peak times--primarily summer holidays--to Costa Mesa.
* Newport Beach operating Costa Mesa’s two libraries for the same fee now paid to the county for that service.
* Linking police computers “to apprehend our mutual crooks,” according to a report from Newport Beach Mayor John W. Hedges.
* Combining data processing staff or equipment.
Also on the table is a plan to consolidate Newport Beach’s computer systems, now handled in two separate departments.
Finance Director Dennis Danner said a management consultant will present results of a review of the city’s data processing activities and recommend linking the information management system with the general information system.
