Sharing Saroyan
As a transplanted New Yorker, I read with interest “Making Book in L.A.” (by Kit Roane, Palm Latitudes, March 19). Considering some Eastern elitists’ dismissal of Los Angeles as a literary wasteland, it’s good to know of John Gabree’s efforts to maintain a cultural milieu.
In referring to L.A.’s great writers in the article, assistant manager Joe Gannon included William Saroyan. Although Saroyan had a beach house in the heart of Malibu and lived in Los Angeles off and on, it was in Fresno that he originated as a writer. A comprehensive bibliography of Saroyan’s works, a major project indeed, is in the works at the Fresno County Library.
