More Chinese Dissidents Are Detained

BEIJING — China on Tuesday rounded up more dissidents before the sixth anniversary of the Tian An Men Square crackdown on student demonstrators on June 4.
Jiang Qisheng, 47, who signed a daring appeal to the Communist Party demanding tolerance of differing opinions, was taken from his Beijing home by police officers. He was the fourth petition signatory to be detained in the past few days
Also held Tuesday was Gou Qinghui, the wife of a Christian activist who was arrested more than a year ago, friends said.
In Washington on Tuesday, Republican and Democratic lawmakers urged the House of Representatives to withdraw favorable trade treatment for China, citing continuing reports of human rights abuses. But Clinton Administration officials said the best human rights policy is to continue open trade.
