Newport Beach is actually more water than beach.
City statistics show that the 36.05-square-mile city limits include 14.01 square miles of land. An additional 2.04 square miles are bay, and 20 square miles are ocean.
The city has 7.21 miles of ocean frontage but 35.94 miles of harbor frontage.
The numbers add up to a lot of opportunities for fun--
12,800 acres of the ocean area are designated for recreational use. And Newport Harbor is home to 9,000 boats, 1,230 residential piers, 2,119 commercial slips and side ties, and 1,221 bay moorings.
