In a repeat from the year before, KCAL-TV Channel 9 walked off with the most statuettes at the 47th annual Los Angeles Area Emmy Awards but saw the prestigious honor for best 60-minute newscast go to rival KTTV-TV Channel 11.
KCAL wound up Saturday night with 10 Emmys for local TV programming in 1994, including for best news special (“The Fires of Autumn”) and best sports series (“Lakertime”). KTTV won eight, including the one for “Fox News at 10” and two for reporter Chris Blatchford.
The 11 p.m. “Action News” of KCBS-TV Channel 2 captured the Emmy for best 30-minute newscast, and the “KTLA Morning News” on Channel 5 was named best daytime newscast.
Besides the 18 awards to KCAL and KTTV, six each went to KCBS, KABC-TV Channel 7 and KCOP-TV Channel 13, three to KTLA, two to KCET-TV Channel 28 and one each to KOCE-TV Channel 50, KVEA-TV Channel 52 and cable channels City-TV and L.A. CityView.
Veteran journalist George Putnam was given the Governors Award for career achievement.
The awards were handed out by the Academy of Television Arts & Sciences in ceremonies at the Pasadena Civic Auditorium.
