RAMBO’S READERS: If you’re homeless, finding a good book may not be a priority. But books can lift the spirits of homeless children, says KCBS-TV Channel 2 weather man Steve Rambo. He’s leading a monthlong drive by the Color Me Bright foundation to collect good-condition books for young readers. . . . Laurie Neuse, co-owner of Spaghettini Restaurant in Seal Beach, has sweetened the deal: Bring your books to her restaurant at 3005 Old Ranch Parkway--the county drop-off point--and she’ll give you a complimentary appetizer.
GO, STAN: There’s a county Transportation Authority study going on to see if the agency should purchase John Wayne Airport. Meanwhile OCTA went ahead and bought another traffic venue: Slic Trak, an Anaheim entertainment complex complete with racing go-carts. . . . “Who needs an airport?”’ says OCTA chief Stan Oftelie. “We’ve got go-carts!” The entertainment center will eventually be razed as part of the Santa Ana Freeway widening project.
A WINNER? Director John Boorman turned to Orange Coast College counseling professor U Kyaw Win for technical help on his latest film, “Beyond Rangoon,” which opens this summer. Win is a Burmese expatriate who puts out the Burma Bulletin newsletter. . . . Boorman’s movie, starring Patricia Arquette, is set against Burma’s 1988 pro-democracy uprising. Says Win: “I helped them make their Burmese village look authentic. It took them five months to build a big pagoda, and it will probably be in the movie for three minutes.”
FRAN’S WORLD: Don’t expect to see New York author-humorist Fran Lebowitz at Disneyland. . . . She was asked by the Washington Post for her opinion of the Big Apple’s attempt to attract more tourists. . . . “Look at what’s happened to 57th Street,” she says, referring to proliferation of tourist-oriented restaurants such as Planet Hollywood and Hard Rock Cafe. “It’s become Anaheim with all those theme restaurants. Tourists are ruining this city. Just leave us alone.”
TONIGHT: Comedians O’Brien & Valdez at 8, the Centerfield Sports Bar & Grill, Huntington Beach. (714) 848-0113.
