Use of Transit Funds Questioned
* I was caught completely off guard by the article June 8 titled, “Suit Accuses County of Misusing Transit Funds.” I was not shocked that funds were being misused but rather that someone has finally taken an interest and is now bringing the misuse to the public’s attention.
The practice of transferring funds from one account to another has repeatedly been questioned by residents, who have addressed their concerns to the Simi Valley City Council, only to have their concerns fall on deaf ears.
It is my understanding that funds requested and allocated for one use must be used for that purpose only. I find myself questioning the fact that Simi Valley purchased the Estes-Baker property (referred to as the regional mall property) with special district funds.
I think it’s about time we hold communities responsible for the misuse of funding--whether state, federal or county--or just community funds. Perhaps then we wouldn’t have to try to balance the budget on the backs of the poor and elderly.
