EU Economy Grew 2.7% Last Year: The European Union’s statistical office said the 1994 figure represents the highest growth rate since 1990, “an unmistakable revival of the EU economies.” In 1993, the EU economy shrank 0.7%, following two years of growth of less than 2%. A separate report from Eurostat shows industrial output rising 1.1% in the 15 EU nations during the first quarter of this year, but that was down from about 2% in mid-1994, the Brussels-based agency said. Portugal, with 6.6% growth last year, and Ireland, with 6%, had the quickest expanding economies of the member nations last year, according to the Eurostat report. The Greek economy showed the slowest growth, jumping only 0.4% last year.
