The San Fernando Valley chapter of the Mexican American Political Assn. is scheduled to meet today in San Fernando with Los Angeles County Supervisor Zev Yaroslavsky.
Topics to be discussed include affirmative action, contracting opportunities for minority-owned businesses, proposed closures of two area medical centers, Proposition 187 and the Pacific Pipeline Project.
The pipeline project is a controversial proposal to build a new crude oil pipeline from a spot near Bakersfield through the San Fernando Valley to refineries in Los Angeles. Local MAPA officials have gone on record against the Pacific Pipeline Project, which is undergoing a series of public hearings hosted by the state Public Utilities Commission.
The San Fernando Valley chapter is part of the nationwide MAPA that promotes Latino activism in politics, education and civil rights.
The meeting is scheduled at 3 p.m. Thursday at El Abuelo Restaurant, 452 N. Maclay Ave., San Fernando.
