TOUR DE FRANCE : Team’s Second-Place Finish Enables France’s Jalabert to Keep Overall Lead

ALENCON, France — Frenchman Laurent Jalabert held his overall lead in the Tour de France when his ONCE team finished second Tuesday in a team time trial.
The Italian team Gewiss won the 41.6-mile race in 1 hour 13 minutes 10 seconds.
The ONCE team was 35 seconds behind and allowed Jalabert to maintain an eight-second lead over Italian Ivan Gotti and Bjarne Riis of Denmark, two riders with Gewiss.
Miguel Indurain of Spain, seeking his fifth consecutive title, was on the Banesto team that finished third, 59 seconds behind Gewiss.
Tony Rominger, Indurain’s top challenger, was on the Mapei team that finished fourth. Rominger was hindered by a flat in the opening minutes.
Gewiss rider Yevgeny Berzin of Russia gained 59 seconds on Indurain.
