STICK UP

In Paramount, there’s something of a police cover-up in the works.
The city is one of many in the county that contracts with the Sheriff’s Department for police services, at a cost in Paramount’s case of $4.5 million a year. But city leaders have always wanted a police department of their own.
Reluctant to spend the extra $1 million or so needed to create a whole new department, the city has come up with a $4,000 plan for instant hometown law enforcement. They are putting “Paramount Police” decals on the sides of a dozen radio cars to cover the sheriff’s logo.
“We’ve been trying to do this for years,” said City Manager Patrick West. “Now, we finally have the sheriff’s approval, so we’ll sort of have our own department. We’re very excited.”
The Paramount City Council is expected to approve the final sticker design--including a red-white-and-blue racing stripe--on Tuesday.
