Re “The River of Hypocrisy Runs Wide and Deep,” Column Left, Aug. 1:
Robert Scheer’s excellent and heartbreaking piece about Susan Smith and the horrible crimes committed against her by her stepfather left one thing out: While he did mention the fact that Beverly Russell was a Republican, Christian Coalition-Pat Robertson follower as he molested Susan for years, he did not remind us that Newt Gingrich blamed the Democrats for the murder of the children.
As we look at these megamouth Republicans and hear them screeching the word values , we fail to see the value of their values. Compared with them, Hollywood looks like Mother Teresa.

* Kudos to Scheer for his “in your face” statements of the truth. Too often in the country I have loved and respected all of my life, I have been told to consider myself among the growing number of pariah as an American, because I do not prescribe to what is moral and acceptable by a vocal minority (or even majority in regard to Congress).
I am pro-democracy (remember the old kind where the basis of a decision was on the merits of an issue and not the loudest person or group?). Beverly Russell, the godly and good, is just one example of the type of individual that the GOP and Christian Coalition have touted to be the ideal American.
May Jehovah, Allah, Buddha, et al. help us all!
