Man Hurt When Train Slams Into Car

An Oxnard man was injured and his car totaled when a slow-moving freight train slammed into his car Tuesday.
Jose Antonio Alvarez, 21, was treated and released from St. John’s Regional Medical Center in Oxnard.
Alvarez, who police said failed to stop at the train crossing at Wooley Road and Richmond Avenue in Oxnard, was hit about 2:30 p.m. by a northbound locomotive traveling about 10 m.p.h. The train is owned by Ventura County Railroad, which operates short-line freight trains between Port Hueneme and several areas in Oxnard.
Alvarez said he didn’t see or hear any signal warnings, but cars traveling in the opposite direction had stopped for the train, police said. The car was a total loss; the train received moderate damage.
Police said Alvarez, an unlicensed and uninsured driver, was slightly cut and complained of chest pains. Alvarez was ticketed for driving without a license or insurance.
