LA HABRA : Council Considers Ban on Homeless Campers

In an effort to rid parks and other city property of homeless campers, the City Council is considering approving an ordinance that would prohibit camping or storage of personal property there.
The proposed law already has received unanimous preliminary approval and will be up for a final vote Oct. 5. It is modeled after a hotly contested Santa Ana measure that was challenged in court as unconstitutional but was upheld in the state Supreme Court this year.
La Habra’s ordinance also would apply to streets, sidewalks and city-owned buildings.
Violation of the ordinance would be a misdemeanor, punishable by up to six months in jail or a fine of up to $1,000 or both, police said.
