Volleyball/Outside hitter
Losing to Gresham of Oregon in a pool-play match at the Las Vegas Durango tournament Friday provided motivation for the Monarchs. Gehlke said they held a team meeting after the loss and vowed to play more as a team. “We needed to learn to trust each other,” she said. It was a quick turnaround. On Saturday, Mater Dei beat Manhattan Beach Mira Costa, Berkeley Prep of Florida (ranked No. 1 in the nation) and third-ranked Stockton St. Mary’s twice while winning the tournament. Gehlke averaged 17 kills in the matches and was named MVP.
