Gov. Tucker’s Trial in Whitewater Probe Postponed to Jan. 16

LITTLE ROCK, Ark. — A federal judge on Wednesday postponed Gov. Jim Guy Tucker’s fraud and conspiracy trial until early next year.
Tucker and Whitewater partners James B. and Susan McDougal had been scheduled to go on trial Tuesday, but U.S. District Judge George Howard Jr. rescheduled it for Jan. 16.
Defense lawyers are trying to get the charges in the Aug. 17 indictment dismissed on several grounds, including the claim that Whitewater independent counsel Kenneth W. Starr has no authority to bring the charges, which concern transactions involving Madison Guaranty Savings & Loan in 1985 and 1986.
The McDougals once owned the thrift and were partners with then-Gov. Bill Clinton and Hillary Rodham Clinton in the Whitewater land development project.
