Hall Eliminated in Senior Tennis

NEWPORT BEACH — Fourth-seeded June Gay of Piedmont defeated unseeded Cathie Hall of Newport Beach, 7-6, 6-4, Wednesday in the 65-and-over division at the U.S. Tennis Assn. Senior Women’s Hardcourt Championships at the Newport Beach Tennis Club.
Hall advanced to the match with a 6-1, 6-1 upset Tuesday over fifth-seeded Piyachart Hussey of Laguna Hills.
In the 75 doubles Wednesday, Charlotte Decker and Suzanna Muccia of Laguna Hills defeated Maxine King of Phoenix and Marion Read of Milwaukee, 7-5, 5-7, 6-4.
Today in the over-75 singles semifinals at 10 a.m., La Jolla’s Dodo Chaeney plays fourth-seeded Alice Beckenbach of Los Angeles and second-seeded Lucy Dettmer of Cathedral City meets third-seeded Decker. . The 65 doubles semifinals begin at 2 p.m.
In 75 doubles today, Decker and Muccia play Dettmer and Pat Yeomans of Los Angeles at 3:30 p.m.
The 65 singles semifinals will be held at 10 a.m. Friday, followed by the 75 doubles finals at 11:30 and the 65 doubles finals at 2 p.m.
The 65 singles finals will take place Saturday at 10 a.m., followed by the 75 singles finals at 11:30.
The event, one of four senior women’s events held nationwide each year, began Monday and is open to the public.
