Tearful Detroit Lion receiver Anthony Carter, unable to bear the pain from a shoulder injury, retired.
“I just want to be known as a good football player, a team player, but most importantly as a good person,” Carter, 35, said, his voice cracking several times.
Carter, a two-time Pro Bowl player who played 11 years in the NFL, holds Minnesota records for receiving yards (7,635) and touchdown catches (52), and is second in receptions (478).

Jerry Jones has done it again, defying the NFL by announcing a deal with American Express, although Visa is the league’s official charge card.
American Express Travel Related Services Co. Inc. said it will become the official credit card of Texas Stadium, home of the Dallas Cowboys. Terms of the multiyear contract weren’t released.
Two weeks ago, NFL Properties Inc., the league’s marketing arm, sued the Cowboys and Jones for $300 million after Jones angered other owners by signing contracts with Nike and Pepsi-Cola.
