GARDEN GROVE — Greg Fausto rushed for a game-high 107 yards and a touchdown as Los Amigos beat La Quinta, 37-12, in a Garden Grove League game Friday night at Bolsa Grande.
Fausto touched the ball just four times in the first half, netting minus-one yard, as Shaun Tagatauli and Falemanu Vaioletama handled the bulk of running for the Lobos (3-2, 1-1).
“We aren’t getting Mark the big holes like we did last year,” Los Amigos Coach Roger Takahashi said of Fausto, who scored 29 touchdowns in 1994. “He’s just been getting little seams. So we were looking to run with a little more power and loosen up the defense a little bit. Then we just changed up on them.”
After holding Los Amigos to 92 total yards in the first half, La Quinta gave up 238 second-half yards and four touchdowns as Los Amigos built on a 10-6 halftime lead.
Fausto had a run of 14 yards to help set up his 21-yard touchdown run on the opening drive of the second half. He added runs of 22 and 20 yards to keep two other scoring drives alive. Tagatauli added 63 yards on 14 carries, including a 13-yard scoring run; the junior fullback has scored in each of the Lobos’ five games this year.
Junior Jhamal Dawkins provided most of the offense for the Aztecs. He rushed for 72 yards and a touchdown, threw an 80-yard scoring pass to James Nguyen on a halfback option, and caught three passes.
La Quinta (0-5, 0-1) gained just 161 total yards, but had its highest-scoring game of the season.
The Lobos scored on their first possession as Jacob Sanchez connected with LaRue Carr for a 21-yard touchdown and a 7-0 lead. A fumble and a missed field goal ended two other chances inside the La Quinta 25 in the first half.
