Poll Finds Optimism About ’96

NEW YORK — U.S. mid-size manufacturers are hopeful about where the economy is headed and believe their profits will rise in 1996, according to a survey released Thursday by the accounting firm Grant Thornton.
Sixty-seven percent of the 250 manufacturing executives questioned recently in the fifth annual Grant Thornton Survey of American Manufacturers described their outlook for the U.S. economy as optimistic. Twenty-four percent were uncertain and 9% were pessimistic.
At the same time, 54% of the manufacturers expect higher profits for 1995 and 65% predicted that earnings will continue to rise next year.
Top executives of companies with annual sales of $10 million to $500 million answered questions by phone in mid- and late October. The independent research firm Clark, Martire & Bartolomeo conducted it; the margin of error was plus or minus six percentage points.
