COMMUNITY COLLEGE ROUNDUP : Golden West Opens State Tournament With a Victory

Golden West rolled past Sacramento in three games in the first round of the state women’s volleyball tournament Friday at Cerritos.
Jessica Redding and Tina Bowman had 11 kills each as the Rustlers won, 15-4, 15-5, 15-9, it the double-elimination tournament.
Beth Rosen added 43 assists for Golden West (22-2), the top-ranked team in the state. Golden West advances to play Pasadena at noon today at Cerritos the second round of the winners’ bracket.
Chabot plays Long Beach at noon at Cypress College also in the winners’ bracket. The winners’ bracket final is at 7 p.m.
In another tournament match:
Chabot 3, Fullerton 1--Fullerton, playing in its first state tournament, won the first game, 15-13, but then lost, 15-12, 15-8, 15-8. Fullerton plays American River at 9 a.m. at Cypress in an elimination match.
In the Orange Coast Kiwanis men’s basketball tournament:
Orange Coast 66, Imperial Valley 59 (OT)--Orange Coast outscored Imperial Valley, 9-2, in overtime. OCC meets Long Beach in the title game at 7 p.m. and Imperial Valley plays Golden West for third place at 5 p.m.
Matt Ambrose had 22 points, including for four in overtime, and eight rebounds for Orange Coast, which played without point guard Adrian Reyes. He broke his ankle Thursday in the Pirates’ victory over Victor Valley.
In the Cuesta women’s basketball tournament:
Orange Coast 78, Bakersfield 68--Jamie Shine scored 20 points and Adrienne Botana added 16 as Orange Coast (6-2) won one semifinal.
In the Sequoias tournament:
Los Angeles Valley 65, Golden West 63--Golden West (2-4) missed two shots in the final 12 seconds in the quarterfinals.
