El Gran Hotel El Convento, a 100-year-old structure in the heart of Puerto Rico’s Old San Juan, is closing for a year for renovation. The hotel, formed from a 17th-century Carmelite convent, will include 54 guest rooms and a retail and entertainment center after it’s revamped. The Plaza de la Catedral, which dates from the 19th century but is on a site that has housed religious structures since the 1500s, will also be restored.
