Samantha Yap, who officials describe as the city’s youngest heroine, was honored by the City Council this week.

The 8-year-old third-grader at Clinton-Mendenhall Elementary School is credited with saving a toddler from drowning in a community pool in September. The youngster rescued 1-year-old Shelah Jurik from the bottom of the pool after the baby jumped in after a bright key ring.

“Samantha’s quick reflex saved Shelah’s life,” Deputy City Manager Mike Fenderson said. “She is a true heroine, and we certainly are all proud of her.”

Samantha accepted a certificate of appreciation from Mayor Bruce A. Broadwater and the council with characteristic modesty, saying simply, “Thank you.”
