Joni Smith is one reason the Long Beach Wilson girls’ track team is an early state title favorite. At the Pasadena Games, Smith, 14, was the first freshman to be named girl athlete of the meet after winning the 400 meters in 55.5 seconds and running on the team’s victorious 400- and 1,600-meter relays.
