Harry Fulton Named to Council Vacancy

Leisure World resident Harry Fulton will succeed Councilman Bill Doane, who resigned in protest after the March election.
Fulton, 73, was selected by the City Council, which questioned five candidates.
Fulton, a Marine Corps veteran and former corporate cost accountant, will be sworn in at the May 13 council meeting.
All five candidates were Leisure World residents, vying to succeed Doane, who stepped down after the March election of slow-growth candidate Patty Campbell. The council seat represents a portion of Leisure World.
Council members said they were impressed with Fulton’s long record of service in Leisure World, where he has lived for 10 years. Fulton has been president of the Mutual 7 section of the retirement community for eight years.
He has served for five years as president of the Presidents Council, a group whose membership is made up of presidents from all Leisure World mutuals.
Fulton also is the star pitcher for the Seal Beach Seals senior softball team.
Councilman George Brown, also a Leisure World resident, said he has served with Fulton on the Presidents Council.
“He’s very sharp,” Brown said. “He’s small-city oriented.”
This is Fulton’s second experience as a councilman. About 20 years ago, he was elected to the City Council in Sheldon, Iowa, where he helped bring a community swimming pool to the city and pushed through a street-paving project.
