A market owner was shot to death Tuesday in a brief but intense gun battle with three men he chased after an armed robbery at his store in South-Central Los Angeles, police said.
One of the suspected robbers was slightly wounded in the gunfight. Investigators said his accomplices commandeered a car and forced the driver to take them to California Hospital, where they dropped off the wounded suspect before fleeing from the car near MacArthur Park. The wounded suspect was arrested at the hospital.
Lt. Jim Voge of the LAPD’s Newton Station detective bureau said at least four robbers entered the market at Adams Boulevard and Hooper Avenue about 5 p.m., taking money from the till and cash and jewelry from several customers.
As the robbers fled on foot, someone telephoned the store owner, police said. Voge said the owner, his son and an employee gave chase in a car, confronting three of the suspects two blocks away at 25th Street and Naomi Avenue.
The owner was mortally wounded in the sidewalk gun battle.
