BASEBALL DAILY REPORT : No Surgery Needed for Randy Johnson

Randy Johnson apparently will not need surgery to correct his back problem, but the Seattle Mariners’ Cy Young Award winner will be out the rest of the month, according to the team doctor.
A bulging disk is what irritated a nerve and put the 6-foot-10 left-hander on the 15-day disabled list. Further tests were being conducted.
Johnson is 5-0 this year. He began experiencing lower-back and right leg problems during his April 26 start in Milwaukee. He missed one start in early May, but returned May 12 to pitch five innings in an 8-5 victory over Kansas City.

The expansion Arizona Diamondbacks are giving away millions before they even play their first game.
The Diamondbacks agreed to pay the Pacific Coast League and Phoenix Firebirds owner Martin Stone a total of $5.1 million for taking over their triple-A territory.
The payment provides compensation for giving up the minor league as required when a major league team comes in.
